Leigh once again were in action this weekend, welcoming Whitstable II to the Field of Dreams. Looking to build on the positive performance from last week against Maidstone, the team was eager to get going in front of a home crowd once again.
Leigh picked up where they left off from last week, coming out of the blocks hard and fast, with Fly-Half Jake Bright converting a penalty in the first minute, and shortly after a quick snipe from Captain Alastair Mackenzie and an offload to Club Captain William McDowell gave Leigh the first try of the match, with the extras unfortunately not being added.
After some hard fought back and forth play, Whitstable cleared their lines well, putting Flynn Kennedy under pressure and forcing an error resulting in a score under the posts for the visitors, and following the successful conversion the score stood at 8-7 in Leigh’s favour.
Leigh defended hard, but ultimately could not prevent Whitstable from adding another seven points on the stroke of half time, and the score at the break read 8-14.
The second half started with more end to end action, but ultimately no action on the scoreboard, with both sides defending hard and well. Leigh advanced down the field thanks to a few penalties and hard carries from the forward pack, before unleashing the backs to move the ball through the hands. Centre Jake Sheldon couldn’t be caught as he dived over in the corner to bring the score within a point, 13-14.
Leigh had more opportunities to add to their tally late in the match, but unfortunately dragged a penalty just wide of the right post, whilst Whitstable were able to convert one of their chances to add 3 points before the end of the game, with the scoreline reading 13-17 at the final whistle.
There were a lot of positives shown in the match for Leigh, and things to work on at training before the squad take the field at Canterbury next week - we hope to see you there!
